Diversity of vascular plant species containing bioactive compounds in Can Tho city
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study was conducted from February 2024 to February 2026 to assess the diversity of vascular plant species containing bioactive compounds in Can Tho City through field surveys, specimen collection, taxonomic identification, and literature synthesis. The results recorded 920 species across 582 genera and 132 families, distributed across four divisions. Most taxa were concentrated in Magnoliophyta, accounting for over 92% at the family, genus, and species levels. The recorded species were mainly cultivated or wild-growing plants, representing 11 life forms and distributed across eight biotopes, with the highest diversity found in home gardens, roadsides, and abandoned lands. Leaves were the plant part containing the highest proportion of bioactive compounds (83.59%). The main groups of compounds included flavonoids, phenols, saponins, and alkaloids. The prominent biological activities were anti-inflammatory (86.74%), antibacterial (86.52%), and antioxidant (85.87%). In addition, 13 rare plant species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book and Circular 85/2025/TT-BNNMT were recorded. The results contribute to clarifying the biological and medicinal potential of the local flora, supporting conservation efforts and the development of resources for traditional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
