Abstract

The Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to study the effect of operating parameters on phenol conversion performance by H2O2 using a Cu/diatomite catalyst. Input parameters included phenol concentration (1000–2000 mg/L), pH (6–8), and reaction time (60–180 min). The effects of these parameters on phenol conversion were modeled and optimized by a BBD-based response surface method. The BBD method demonstrated the ability to develop a highly accurate quadratic polynomial model for phenol conversion (R² > 0.99). The optimization results under the BBD method showed a conversion rate of 95% was achieved under optimal conditions. These conditions included an initial phenol concentration of 1000 mg/L, an initial solution pH of 6.6, and a reaction time of 180 minutes. The catalyst was also recovered and reused through four consecutive cycles. The results showed that phenol conversion remained at approximately 47.1% after four cycles of reuse.
