Abstract

Tong On ritual at Chanh My God Temple is one of the local people’s aged-old practices. In the past, it was a folk religion operating independently of other spiritual institutions such as god temples, shrines, Master worshipping shrine, temples, etc. Currently, Tong On ritual is no longer an independent popular institution as before, but it has been embedded in the worshipping ceremonies in temples, shrines, Master shrines, etc. Chanh My God Temple is one of the typical folk religions still maintaining the regular rituals of Tong On. As an old-established rule, Tong On ritual is held periodically in the third lunar month every year. In addition to the preparation work, Tong On ritual at Chanh My God Temple consists of 10 ceremonials: the Thanh Hoang greeting, Ancestors greeting, Soldiers greeting, Thanh Hoang celebrating, Soldiers forming, Food distribution, Papers distribution, On Bo celebrating, On farewelling and Ancestors thanking. Tong On is the annual ritual of Chanh My ward people to banquet and farewell the On Bo off the local residence. This is one of the traditional practices preserved for generations of Chanh My residence.
