Abstract

Do Lenh Thien is one of the lesser-studied authors in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Vietnamese medieval literature as a period marked by profound socio-political upheavals. Approaching his Sinographic poetry from the perspective of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, this article examines the influence and impact of these intellectual traditions on the poet’s response to historical reality. By combining analytical–synthetical procedures with an interdisciplinary approach integrating literary, cultural, and intellectual history, the study investigates the presence of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist thought in Do Lenh Thien’s Sinographic poetry across three principal dimensions: Confucianism as reflective engagement with moral ideals and responsibility; Buddhism as meditation on impermanence and spiritual release; and Taoism as an expression of harmony and transcendental ease. Thereby, the article contributes to offer a better understanding of Do Lenh Thien’s position and literary contribution to the development of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Vietnamese literature as a field in which focused scholarship on this author remains relatively limited.
