Abstract

Korean fairytale treasure has many similar stories to those of Vietnam. Is it due to the universal characteristic of the fairy genre? To address this question, basing on Propp's structure-function theory, we chose to compare the position of the main motifs in two specific stories of "Two girls and tumors" in Vietnam and "Old man and tumors” in Korea. These two stories are chosen because they are both about the type of the devil’s gift - an interesting story type, which provokes enormous research. We aimed to discover the similaries and differences of motifs inherent in fairy tales from the two countries; thereby coming to general conclusions in using fairytale theory to study specific subjects.
