Abstract

In the Vietnamese’ ancient marriage ritual, the practice of paying "tien cheo" (fees) for the villages used to be a law and a culture habit. Although such a practice no longer exists due to historical change, the image "tien cheo cuoi" (wedding fees) is still a remarkable symbol in folk songs. On surveying folk songs related to "tien cheo", this article makes contribution to looking at the Vietnamese’s village customs and traditional rituals that are gradually forgotten through time.
