The land symbol in Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the novel Gone with the Wind, along with interpretations of the American Civil War (1861-1865) and the immortal love story between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler, Margaret Mitchell created a new myth of land fully characteristic of Southern United States culture during the second half of the nineteenth century. Land in this work is very abundant in symbolic meanings: the promising land for Gerald O’Hara’s career in association with cotton plantations; Tara symbolizing agriculture civilization as well as an eternal mother guarding Scarlett. And analyzing land symbols is also the best way to explain Mitchell’s political views.
