Fish symbolism in the Southerners’ folk verses

Abstract
Symbolism is to replace one thing for another, which indicates specifically humans’ unlimited imaginations and also marks national culture. For Vietnamese people in general and the Southerners in particular, fish is a cultural symbol bearing a profound mark of agricultural residents in the watery region. This paper investigates fish symbolism in the Southerners’ folk verses; thereby it points out that fish is personified or has the implication of man. This symbol creates a picture of transformation and close relationship between man and animals.
