Factors influencing students’ university choice decisions in the Mekong Delta Region

Abstract

This study was to identify and measure how much various factors influence high school students’ decisions in selecting a university in the Mekong Delta region. Data were collected from 630 students using a structured questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression analysis was employed to examine the effects of independent variables on their choice decisions. The findings reveal that seven factors have a positive and statistically significant impact on their decisions, including admissions counseling information, tuition costs, personal characteristics, institutional reputation, advice from others, academic programs, and employment opportunities. Among these, admissions counseling information and tuition costs exert the strongest impact. The study offers practical implications for higher education institutions in designing academic programs, developing effective admissions communication strategies, and formulating appropriate financial support policies. In addition, the results provide a basis for high schools to enhance the quality of career guidance activities, thereby supporting students in making more proactive and effective decisions regarding their choice of university and field of study.
