Abstract

When the Indochina War was going, the United States recognized Vietnam's important strategic location in the confrontation with the socialist bloc. Immediately after the war ended, the United States government realized the need for a new government to replace France, one capable of helping maintain American influence in South Vietnam. With United States assistance, the Ngo Dinh Diem administration was established, aligning its interests with those of the United States. In 1954, the Geneva Accords on Indochina were signed. Many provisions of the Accords significantly impacted the interests of both the United States and the Republic of Vietnam government. This article will analyze the role of the United States in the political, military, economic, and social spheres concerning the Ngo Dinh Diem administration's failure to strictly implement the provisions of the 1954-1956 Geneva Accords. The article contributes scientific arguments about historical period of the early years after the Geneva agreement, helping to further clarify the cause that led to the Anti-American Resistance War to Save the Country (1954-1975).
