Abstract

Melaleuca forests play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and in regulating the carbon cycle. This study was conducted in Gao Giong Ecotourism Area, Dong Thap Province, Vietnam, from June 2025 to March 2026 to estimate soil organic carbon stocks in Melaleuca forests. Soil samples were collected from standard plots at two depths (0-20 cm and 20-60 cm), with a total of 44 samples, and subsequently analyzed in the laboratory to determine physicochemical properties and organic carbon content. The results showed that the soils were characterized by acidic conditions and relatively low bulk density, with pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and bulk density ranging from 3.97 to 4.27, 0.53 to 1.26 mS/cm, and 0.99 to 1.25 g. cm-3, respectively. Soil organic carbon stocks ranged from 120.33 to 196.73 tons. ha-1. In addition, the direct planting method showed a higher capacity for carbon accumulation compared to the raised-bed planting method. These findings provide a scientific basis for proposing forest management strategies aimed at enhancing soil carbon sequestration, thereby contributing to greenhouse gas emission reduction and climate change adaptation.
