Developing fourth-grade students’ reading comprehension capacity in Tan Long Commune, Can Tho City
Main Article Content
Abstract
Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills in the Vietnamese language subject at the primary level. It contributes to the development of students' language competence, literary competence, communication skills, and lifelong learning abilities. However, the current state of teaching reading comprehension still faces many limitations, especially for fourth-grade students. This is a pivotal stage in transitioning from reading to acquire information to reading for understanding and application. Based on a practical survey conducted at several primary schools in Tan Long Commune, Can Tho City along with theoretical research and the 2018 General Education Curriculum, this article proposes several measures to develop reading comprehension skills for fourth-grade students. These include teaching upon the “Before – During – After Reading” model, using mind maps, storytelling – role-playing techniques, and connecting lessons to real-life situations. These measures aim to support teachers in improving the quality of Vietnamese language teaching and align with the orientation toward developing students' comprehensive competencies in the new general education curriculum.
