Main Article Content
Abstract
Dong Ho paintings are listed in the national list of intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. This type of painting has high historical, cultural and artistic values. The painting images are rustic, folk but embedded with humane messages expressing the Vietnamese’s longing for a thriving, happy life. In this article, we will clarify the uniqueness of Dong Ho paintings, especially the chicken image. Chicken is the animal symbolizing January and the first day of the month. Therefore, Vietnamese people often tick chicken pictures on the doors during Tet holidays to prevent ghosts and welcome the coming luck. Thereby we will recognize the needs to preserve and develop the cultural values of this type of paintings being faded away.
