Some suggested activities to help pupils understand tens and ones in teaching and learning first grade mathematics

Abstract
Basically, children learn numbers as a kind of continuum when they practice counting. With such a simple way, it is impossible for children to master the inherent structure of number system as well as to build groups of tens, hundreds, thousands, etc…. As the results, it is certain that comparing two numbers, sorting array of natural numbers and implementing numeric operations are very hard work to them. In this paper, 5 specific activities based on activating pupils’ cognitive learning are introduced with the aim of providing pupils better understanding of the tens and ones in learning first grade mathematics.
