Abstract

Accurate pronunciation of the Vietnamese language is an essential foundation for Khmer ethnic students, especially first graders. This will help them effectively access Vietnamese and other subjects. However, due to the differences in the phonological systems between the Khmer and Vietnamese languages, first-grade Khmer students in Lam Tan commune, Can Tho city often make pronunciation. These errors include confusing initial consonants (s/x, tr/ch, r/g, etc.), incorrect finals (ao/au, uôi/ui, etc.), and wrong tones (hỏi/ngã, etc.), which affects their learning and communication. The article surveyed and analyzed the pronunciation errors of first-grade Khmer ethnic students and the causes of these issues. Thereby, it proposes solutions to correct Vietnamese pronunciation by analyzing common errors, practicing pronunciation through hands-on activities, listening and speaking practice, language games, and regular assessment. These measures contribute to supporting teachers in training first-grade Khmer ethnic students' Vietnamese pronunciation; thus, helping improve the quality of teaching the Vietnamese language and developing students' comprehensive abilities under the new general education program.
