Developing 9th-graders’ mathematical communication ability through teaching the chapter on measurements in right triangles

Abstract
Under the 2018 General Education Curriculum for Mathematics, this subject contributes to the formation and development of students' mathematical competence (with computational ability being its most prominent expression), which includes the following core components: mathematical thinking and reasoning competence, mathematical modeling competence, mathematical problem-solving competence, mathematical communication competence, and the competence to use tools and means for learning mathematics. Thus, mathematical communication competence is one of the five essential components for students. It helps students listen, understand, read, take notes (summarize), and convert between everyday language and mathematical language. This, in turn, reinforces their understanding and deepens their concept memory, as well as equipping them with the skills to present, ask questions, discuss, and debate mathematical content, ideas, and solutions in interaction with teachers and peers. After presenting the concepts of communication competence and mathematical communication competence, this paper proposes several teaching strategies aimed at developing mathematical communication competence for 9th-grade students through the instruction of the topic “Trigonometric Relations in Right Triangles.” Reasonably proposed pedagogical measures will help improve the effectiveness and quality of teaching this topic in particular, and mathematics instruction at the lower secondary level in general.
