Abstract

Under the 2018 General Education Curriculum, which highlights the development of student competencies and qualities, mathematics teaching should focus on fostering student competence in applying mathematics to real-life cases. However, the teaching of the topic Equations and Systems of Equations in Grade 9 still mainly focuses on developing problem-solving skills and provides limited opportunities for students to apply mathematical knowledge to authentic contexts. This paper demonstrates mathematical application competence within the topic Equations and Systems of Equations in Grade 9 and proposes a process for designing teaching situations aimed at developing this competence. Several teaching situations are designed around practical problems closely related to students’ daily lives, enabling them to model real-world cases, formulate and solve equations or systems of equations to address practical problems. The findings provide teachers with practical guidance for organizing Grade 9 mathematics instruction in connection with real-life contexts, thereby fostering students’ competence in applying mathematics to practice and enhancing the effectiveness of competency-based teaching.
